Content Maps

Content Maps allow you to cross-reference your indexed content (articles, etc) to related meta information such as the category or section in which they reside.

Content maps are split into two parts:

Branches: These are a super-containers for a particular type of information.  For example, a branch could be "Section", "Category", "Event" or "Author".

Nodes: Nodes are the actual values for the meta information in a particular branch.  The nodes are, for example, the names of the categories or sections or authors.

These branches and nodes are what make up the advanced search panel available on the frontend.  For each branch, there can be a drop-down select list, and the nodes are added as values to the respective list.

It's important to note that branches and nodes from different content types are merged into the one list.  A Joomla artice in a category called "News" and a DOCMan PDF in a category named the same are mapped to the same node in the same branch.  This is a little like tagging different types of content with the same label.  The effect is that your site visitor does not have to know how your content is classified in order to set the correct filters to find it.

To access the Contet Maps, click Content Maps in the Finder sub-menu bar.  The first screen will the be list of branches.

An administrator can perform seven main actions within the Manage Labels screen:

Publish Branches: For a branch to be visible to site users, it must be published in the database. To publish one or more branches, select the checkbox next to the branch(es) you would like to publish, and then click the Publish button. You can also click on the red X icon in the far column.

Unpublish Branches: Unpublishing branches prevents them (the whole select list) from being displayed in the Advanced Search panel. To unpublish one or more branches, select the checkbox next to the branch(es) you would like to hide and then press the Unpublish button. You can also click on the green checkmark icon in the far column.

Delete Branches: To remove branches from the system, select the checkboxes next to one or more of the Branches to be removed and then press the delete button in the toolbar. This will permanently delete from the database.  If you accidentally delete the wrong branches you can re-index your content and the will return.

Options: To configure the default settings for Finder, click on the Options button in the toolbar.

Get Help: To get help with Finder, click on the Help button in the toolbar. This will open a new browser window for the Finder Documentation at JXtended.com

To browse the list of nodes that are associated with a branch, for example the list of categories in the category branch, click on the name of the branch.

The actions for this screen, for nodes, is exactly the same as for the branches.  However, when you unpublish a node it removes it from the list of available values in the Advanced Search panel.  This allows you to hide spurious values or simply limit the choice for the browser to only those values you think are relevent to them.
