JXtended Investing in Joomla 1.6

Posted January 26, 2009

The JXtended Team - Rob Schley, Louis Landry and Andrew Eddie - is currently in Australia, having met with the other Joomla Development Coordinators for the first ever Joomla Development Summit - a grueling four days of whiteboard planning and coding.  We are very excited to announce that we are donating a number of JXtended technologies to the Joomla 1.6 source.

Comments

We are donating our Comments extension to Joomla 1.6.  We feel very strongly that this move, along with access control improvements, will put Joomla in better standing with other Content Management Systems.  We will still be releasing and supporting the commercial version for Joomla 1.5 but will be providing an upgrade path to Joomla 1.6.  Comments for Joomla 1.6 will go into the core just prior to the first public beta release.  Choosing JXtended Comments now gives you the smoothest transition into Joomla 1.6.

Access Control

Over the last few months, we've been investing a lot of research time into improving our Control extension by creating a hybrid Member centric management system.  This new technology will form the backbone of the Joomla 1.6 access control system and new member manager (replacing the current user manager).  This system will be extendable allowing such things as custom user fields.

Nested Categories

Customers of Magazine and Catalog have enjoyed the ability to create nested category trees for a long time.  We are bringing this technology into the Joomla 1.6 core to break the current two-level (section/category) barrier.

JXtended Libraries

Several parts of the JXtended engine room will now be integrated into the Joomla 1.6 Framework.

Our Form package will give other third-party developers the same productivity boost we enjoy as we develop our extensions.  It provides a complete rendering, validation and filtering framework for dealing with input forms.

MVC improvements include adding our protocol-based Controller dispatcher making it easy to divide tasks between multiple controllers, and allowing the handling of different protocols such as JSON for Ajax driven extensions.  Our Javascript internationization library also goes in allowing developers to localise (translate) text within Javascript source.

JXtended is proud to be able to support the Joomla Project in this way.  Sales of our commercial GPL software help us to continue this support.

These are great contributions to the codebase (and as a webmaster who uses a lot of them, I know they are). I know we all thank JXtended for that. But we also say thanks for two other things.

First, thanks for making the time (and giving up the billable time) to be part of the meeting in Australia.

Second, and for me more importantly, JXtended is showing us all how important contributions from the Joomla! commercial development community are for the future development of Joomla. That is where innovation and experimentation happen as people implement new ideas on sites. Thanks for that and I hope that a growing list of others will join you.

1.6 is going to be incredible. :)

Nothing but respect for Andrew, Louis and Rob. These items, alone, will make Joomla! 1.6 ridiculously powerful and easy to use. Thanks.

Great news!! To the JXtended Team ( Rob, Louis and Andrew ), a Huge Huge Thank You. The additional functionality provided by these donated modules into the 1.6 core will, in my mind, open-up so many opportunities for Joomla in the realm of online information technology.
